All about Big Boolies – The story so far…

Gemma, Creator of Big Boolies, studied Art & design at college in scarborough after leaving school. During her last year at college she met Nick – a self confessed petrol head, one of Nick’s many qualities which Gemma herself found appealing! After a few years of dating and working nine-to-five, Gemma and Nick got married. Years of car swapping, enjoying the car scene, going to car, bike and 4×4 shows and meeting like-minded folk gave them a great circle of friends. A couple of children later and Nick was now working for a local estate maintaining and looking after a fleet of vehicles – mainly farm machinery and land rovers – and an Agricultural Engineer. Gemma was also back to work, working part-time for a local sign making company screen printing T-shirts and designing and making safety signs.

Years passed and Gemma was itching to do something for herself and Nick. Still working at the same company, which also now made T-shirts for a very well known Rock T-shirt website, Gemma had the bug and could see the potential in a T-shirt business. She really wanted to see if she could create something within this area. Cars having a huge factor In their lives and T-Shirts too, it seemed to Gemma to be the light bulb moment and this is where it all began…

Gemma says: “March 2008 in PC World is actually where it all began. £25 for a build-your-own website at home package, domain name included! Total bargain! So the plans started, I used some funds I had been given from my mum to buy a cheap plotter from the internet, I already had the computer at home and the experience of the programs from college, the job and also the self taught stuff I had learned with computers by myself. Job done, all we needed now was a name.

“As silly as it sounds it came to Nick and I as we laid in bed one morning. “Boolies!” Nick and I always call alloy wheels or big tyres on 4×4’s “Big Boolies.” So there we had it: We had a name – a crazy name – but one that he and I knew would stick in peoples minds and also be a bit tongue-in-cheek, one with me being, shall we say a busty girl!”

The Boolies Moto Art sector came soon after, when it dawned on Gem and Nick that the same equipment they already owned and the design background Gem had could be put to use within the business.

Many car shows went by having a trade stand and many months of them both working hard through the week and even on the weekends. In May 2010 Gemma left the part time job and started Big Boolies full time. Nick became an official partner in the business supporting it in the early days with his agricultural engineering job. After a big break in the form of a vehicle livery contract in June 2012 and the opportunity of working with a large local agricultural firm, Gemma needed to move from the small office and go into an industrial unit, found on Showfield Lane in malton. In November 2012 Big Boolies.com became a limited company with both Nick and Gem as directors. The work was flooding in since the move, so Nick eventually gave up the Engineering job in May 2014 and became the second full time employee of the company.

Boolies Moto Art, along with the T-shirts now becoming successful, meant nick was the livery guy and Gemma the creative director behind it all, and this working system has seen it grow so quickly with the love and passion for each other, and all that they do completely obvious.

Bigbooles.com now trademarked and employing a further two more staff in the last year means they now have more man power behind them and a proper #teamboolies.

Booler 4×4 the latest in the Boolies brand, was started in February 2017, bringing into the business another passion that Nick and Gemma have. Nick now missing the ‘spannering’ and probably known as the local land rover off road Geek anyway, they brought in the off road preparation sector. Offering clients the opportunity to have a custom made build catered to their budget and spec.
